Safety Briefings-Why It Matters?
How often do you put down your news paper when the flight attendants are giving your a safety briefing? How often do you give them your full divided attention? I have to admit I am guilty of it myself when I'm dead heading. Because I fly so much, I sometimes take that briefing for granted when I am sitting back there with the passengers. The simple facts are that most pilots have at least one aborted takeoff per year. In most cases, they abort for precautionary reasons. However, every once in a while an aborted takeoff could put you in peril such as an on board fire. A fire is the most critical emergency you could have on an airplane. If a critical emergency occurs, your quick action will determine your safety. Think about those who survived the world trade towers despite the fact that many worked on the top floor. They took part in fire drills, and made a quick decision to evacuate. Others in the world trade hesitated or decided to evacuated too late. Those people didn't make it out of the buildings. That's why it is so important to pay attention to detail when it comes to the safety briefing. If you think about it, the Titanic ship sinking is the reason why when you take a modern day cruise they are required to give you a safety briefing just like airlines. Although evacuating from an aborted takeoff is extremely rare it will give you better mental preparation in case it does occur.
