Summary of Air France Accident
This week accident investigators came up with some new info on the Air France Accident that happened 3 years ago after it took off from Brazil. The Air France A -330 accident was a big mystery because it was difficult to locate the black boxes which was recently discovered several thousand feet deep in the Atlantic Ocean. The on board computers on the airplane gave some clues early on in the investigation that pointed to the pitot tube malfunction because it froze up in flight. The pitot tube is a narrow tube attach along the fuselage of the airplane just below the cockpit that gives airspeed readout & other instrument data. This information all feeds into another computer that works with the autopilot. When information to the cockpit instruments are missing then the auto pilot gets confuses & disengages. The two pilots flying were captain qualified first officers( co-pilots). They were relieving the captain on a schedule rest break which is quite normal on an international flight. It appears the pilots stalled the airplane after getting confused by erroneous instruments. A stall is when you have a disruption of air flow over the wing. If you remember from previous accidents there is never one thing that cause an accident but rather a chain of events. In this case there was a lot. Starting with Air France knowing about the pitot tube problem & taking a long time to correct the problem. However, ultimately the pilots stalled the airplane. At the end of the day there will be a lot of lessons learned for the aviation industry.
