Mid-Air Collision
Just recently there was a report that two aircraft almost had a mid air collision. One aircraft was American Airlines, & the other was two military aircraft. FAA reports that the aircraft came within a mile from each other. So, how does this happen? You probably wondering isn't there modern technology to avoid this. In fact, there is modern technology to avoid this. In the real world with everything working right this should not happen. However, when something goes wrong the next safety device is tcas, or traffic collision avoidance system. Tcas is a amazing computer device that allows two aircraft that are on a pending collision course to avoid each other by communicating directions for each aircraft to follow. In case the air traffic controller screws up, the tcas is there to save the day. In this incident with American Airlines & the military aircraft the reason they got too close is because the military aircraft don't use tcas technology , and that's because they fly in military formation a lot. If you fly in military formation that conflicts with the tcas computer. So far, the airlines & corporate aircraft have tcas. Tcas is expensive equipment, but is a wonderful safety device.

considering that the planes were allegedly 200 ft vertical and 2000 ft horizontal from each other, I would love to know the military's explanation for this. I find it curious that the AA flight apparently continued on its way. The passengers must have been frightened at the sudden movement. Did the pilot explain to them what happened?

I personally think the air traffic controllers were at fault. Unless they took evasive action then it's unlikely the passengers knew what happen. Two aircraft 1000 feet apart pass each other rather quick.

Do military aircraft show up on civilian radar? If so then yes blame the ATCs. Its not the 2,000 horizonal feet that bothered me, its the 200 vertical, and since the civilian pilot apparently had to make sudden moves, I cant imagine how the passengers wouldnt have known.

Oh yeah! Military aircraft usually talk to civilian controllers. Most military aircraft comes up on tcas too. I don't know about the high tech steathly stuff.
