So What Is The Big Deal With Cell Phones
Earlier this week Ms Arianna Huffington, an author & columnist for the online Huffington Post got into a small altercation with a fellow passenger on a United Express flight. It appears Ms Huffington disregarded in flight rules, and refuse to turn off her cell phone . The aircraft was taxing for take off en route from Washington, DC to NYC. One passenger got annoyed when she disregarded the commands of a flight attendant. This passenger had some words with Arianna into they were both talked to by the flight crew.
So, what is the big deal with not being able to use a cell phone while on the ground, or in flight? Well in all honesty the chances of it causing a plane crash is remote at best. In some cases it had interfere with the electronics in the airplane such as communications & navigation equipment. However, airplanes have redundant systems such as two or more radios, & newer cell phones are capable of operating on very low power settings, which may not interfere with the aircraft as much. Most of the problems stem from the older model cell phones of the 1990's.
However, there's other reasons to consider why the FCC, & FAA won't allow cell phones on airplanes. The phone carriers as an industry could lose a lot of money. At 30,000 ft the cell phone pings erratically off of various cell towers making it difficult to track the different networks usage. It's not worth the hassle for the phone industry to solve unless it's a strong demand for it. I personally prefer for the FCC & FAA to keep the ban.
Another reason to think about keeping the ban on cell phone usage in flight is because it's a huge distraction for the flight crew. The flight attendants could barely get through their safety briefings without interruption from conversations & chit chat in the cabin.
But the other reason is that taxi, take-off and landing are the most dangerous part of your journey on a plane. If an emergency is happening, the flight crew needs 100 percent of the passengers attention.
If a large portion of passengers are on the phone, and the crew have to run around the cabin getting everyone's attention to follow instructions, it could cost valuable minutes and possibly lives.
