Autism Kids Prepare To Fly

Recently at Philadelphia International Airport a program was put in place to help children traveling alone with autism become more accustom of what to expect while traveling by air travel. This program is being run by the airport, Southwest Airlines, & a team of child development specialist to help operate mock flights for children with autism. This is the only program of its kind in this country. However, development specialist left open the possibility of similar programs at other airports. The program works similarly like desensitizing a persons fear from flying. It starts at the airport were child developers help coach children how to navigate through the airport. They then have airline personnel help them board a mock flight, including an in-flight briefing. They board an actual plane that stay overnight at the airport. Many families with autistic children are reluctant to fly & often drive long distances for family vacations. This program has help to ease the anxiety of children & their families who need to travel. Other airlines have agree to participate in similar program such as Frontier, US Aiways, & Bristish Airways.
