Turbulence

Over the weekend there was a flight that encountered severe turbulence that injured 16 passengers. Severe turbulence or clear air turbulence is very rare. Most people never encounter it. How do you know you encountered severe turbulence? Basically, if anything hits the cabin ceiling rather it's food, bags, or passengers then it's severe turbulence. The flight over the weekend was a United 747 that took off from Washington Dulles en route to Narita, Japan when it encountered the turbulence over Anchorage, Alaska. It's interesting to point out that all the 16 passengers that were hurt was out of their seats or didn't have their seat belts. The crew place the selt belt sign on minutes earlier. Encountering severe turbulence can be a scary experience for most passengers, but in most encounters there is usually no damage to the airplane.
