Traveling abroad

Many people ask me about traveling on other international carriers. They wonder is it safe. I always tell people to do their homework. Most North American & European air carriers have good safety standards & solid reputations. There are some carriers in Eastern Europe, Asia, South America & some parts in Africa that you have to worry about. For example, Africa accounts for only 4 per cent of the world's air traffic, but nearly a third of the world's air disasters occur on the continent. The dismal situation has prompted aviation officials to decide to tighten safety standards and collaborate on crash investigations. In a three day meeting in this West African capital, aviation officials from across the continent decided Thursday to form regional organizations to help investigate all air crashes.   Africa's disproportionate share of aircraft disasters is often attributed to bad equipment, poor maintenance and failure to adhere to safety standards. Poor infrastructure and emergency response services in many African countries can lead to greater fatalities. The bottom line is that when you travel abroad on a foreign carrier you should do your homework to see if that carrier have a good safety reputation.
