Power Naps
Is power naps on the flight deck a good thing? I guess it depends on who you ask. The FAA & US air carriers don't allow naps on the flight deck. But in light of some prior accidents & incidents like the one on Buffalo, NY last February, or the North West crew incident last week some are saying it may be a good idea. Nasa has conducted research for the last thirty years & have concluded that controlled power naps on the flight deck can enhance safety & crew performance during the most critical phase of flight such as landing. Research has also been done at flight research associates & they also believe their are benefits from it. The NTSB believes most airline accidents involves some fatigue as a secondary factor. Most foreign carriers allow their pilots to nap in cruise flight. Such examples are British Airways & Air Canada. It would be interesting to see if this will be a common practice in the U.S.
