Should we put camera's in the cockpit?

There had been a lot of news coverage last week involving the two pilots at North West Airlines that were supposedly so occupied on their lap tops that they failed to communicate with air traffic controllers. There been some discussion about maybe putting camera's in the cockpit to help prevent this from happening again. I could understand how many people were upset about this incident. I certainly was. Put I also believe we shouldn't jump to conclusions. First of all, I do believe that both pilots fell asleep. But I don't think camera's in the cockpit would help. When your body is tired, or fatigued you're going to fall asleep regardless if theirs cameras or not. Also, this is an added burden to the airlines that already is struggling to stay afloat. This would not have any impact on safety, or nor will it prevent an incident from happening. I don't want to see airlines cut other budgets from other departments to pay for this. The real issue here is pilot work rules & crew rest requirements. These are the issues that should be address by the FAA, NTSB etc. These same issues grab attention last year with that Continental Connection Buffalo crash. However,  I don't believe we had many incidents like the North West crews.  But, it does happen from time to time. This has nothing to do with using lap tops on the flight deck. Besides some airlines conduct some flight duties electronically. Many people don't realize that some airlines use laptops for calculating weight & balance prior to departure. Many airlines like Jet blue issue their pilots lap tops during training. Computers are use extensively for training pilots on everything from aircraft systems using an cd-rom, fms, route planning & weight & balance. Some pilots keep critical safety information on their lap tops. So I think the real issue the FAA, media etc needs to address is crew rest issues.

I agree with you Capt Eric. These two pilots did an injustice to the rest of us by pretending to be on a laptop. There isn't anything so interesting on a laptop that would have prevented them from paying attention to their duties. The only reasonable answer is that they simply fell asleep.

Gone are the days when we hauled around 50 lbs. of manuals...it's all on the laptop. It's imperative for pilots to be permitted to use laptops in the cockpit.

The one key issue that you bring up is getting enough rest. This is a more important issue that needs to be dealt with in the media.

Putting cameras in the cockpit won't help.

I totally agree with you Capt. Eric- Sleep is mandatory. If you don't let them sleep they will fall asleep during flight regardless of if there's cameras or not.
