Turbulence

If you did an online poll about what scares most people the majority would say a fear of turbulence. It's only natural to have such anxieties about turbulence because many people don't understand it. The important thing about turbulence is that it is a natural state of the atmosphere. Turbulence will not cause structural damage to the aircraft. Obviously, the only risk comes with you banging your head on the ceiling if you don't keep your seatbelt on. That would have to be some serious turbulence to cause that to happen. The main source of turbulence is convective. This occurs when the sun's radiation heats the earth's surface & causes rising heat that creates up drafts, and down drafts. When the airplane flies through these drafts they cause the bumps that people don't like. You can reduce your anxiety by having a clear understanding about turbulence & knowing that its no threat to the airplane. It's not going to snap the wings off. The wings are designed to take a lot of bending. I like to think of turbulence as speed bumps. So on your next flight just dismiss any notion of negative thoughts with turbulence.
