Creating a surreal environment
One of the things that I recommend in my fear of flying course is to create a surreal environment in the airplane so that you would forget that your on an airplane. Yeah I know, easier said then done. When you suffering negative thoughts & anxiety about the flight, you have to try to remove yourself from the environment. One way to do that is by distracting. You can preoccupy your mind by doing puzzles, etc. But, you can also close the window shade in your seat & place ear plugs on. This has the effect of reducing engine sound & weird noises that make some people nervous. With the noise reduction you will notice after awhile, your much more relax. You can also try placing an eye mask on which would help make you sleep easier. Try this the next time you fly.

In my experience it's not essential to get on with the person that you're acting opposite.
