Scare Tactics

On August 8, 2009 there was a mid-air collision between a small airplane & a tourist helicopter. In total 9 people were killed in this terrible accident. What I find astonishing is that the local papers (The NY Post) keep reprinting & or showing videos of the accident over & over again everyday. I've been buying the daily newspaper just so I can keep track of when the news story end. This accident happened on August 8, & as of today they still keep showing the same images in the paper. There's nothing new to report about this unfortunate accident. There is no black box or flight recorder because these were both small airplanes. So why is there so much news coverage on this? Its because of over sensational news coverage. The news networks loves traumatic stories especially anything in which someone happened to capture the moment on video. Competitive networks will then try to get a better version of the same video clip so to draw more TV ratings. Unfortunately, this scares the crap out of the general public who has always been told by the news media that flying is safe. However, when there is an occasional accident that same news media will cover that accident for weeks giving the impression that flying is unsafe.  Based upon the news coverage of this Hudson River accident you would think that there's been a mid-air collisions over NYC every week. However, based upon the facts there hasn't been a mid-air collision in the NY metro area since the mid-80's. The last one was out of Teterboro Airport in 1986. I respect the media. I also understand the media has an important job of reporting the news.  But, people with anxiety may want to avoid news coverage for a while when ever there's an accident. It serves no useful purpose to be glued to the TV. Instead, read only positive news stories to distract your mind .
