Mid Air Collision
Today, there was a tragic accident over the Hudson River in New York City involving a mid air collision between a small sight seeing helicopter & a small airplane. Everyone on both aircraft died. I could certainly understand how people suffer more anxiety with all these recent incidents & accidents this year. But, at around the same time last week in New York a packed SUV with a family of four collided head on with another car killing eight people. That was just one car accident that day. My point is that you can't live life inside a bubble always worrying about the what if's. This was the first midair collision in the NY airspace in many years. Some of you are asking can this happen in a commercial airliner. I will never say never, but the chances are very low. I would say the chances are just as good as snow in Hawaii. First, many jets, & turboprops have an anti-collision device called a TCAS or Traffic Collision Avoidance System. The device warns of any aircraft in close vicinity then directs the other aircraft to take evasive action. Both computers on both of the aircraft's TCAS will talk to each other & give directions to avoid a collision. It's very expensive so it's not a common device on smaller airplanes.
