Pilot Fatigue

Pilot Fatigue has always been a tough issue to solve since the beginning days of airline operations. The airlines, pilot unions, & FAA never seem to agree on a fair system for work rules. Work rules we have currently has been in effect for over thirty years. For example, the regulations say that pilots can only fly up to 8 hours a day, but be on duty for as much as16 hours. Many passengers don't realize that flight crews spend many hours in the terminal sometimes delayed due to ground stops. Crews are not paid while in the terminal. They get paid only when the aircraft pushes back from the gate. Furthermore, you could get really fatigue sitting in the terminal or crew room before your flight starts. After this recent buffalo crash of the Dash-8 Continental Colgan Connection in February the FAA decided it's going to try again to work out an agreement between the airlines, unions, & government to develop new rules on limiting pilot fatigue by September 1 2009. Some countries like New Zealand, & Australia have already changed their work rules. So maybe there is some hope that our government will do the same.
