Bird Strikes

From time to time we hear headlines about birds getting sucked up into an engine & & causing an engine failure. I bet you're wondering how often this occur? Should I be really worried about this. In reality, there is no reason to have increase anxiety over this issue. This is no more common than you hitting an animal or road kill on the highway. For some reason birds love air fields. Perhaps its the grass of the airport that they like. I imagine that this must be heavan for birds. For airport operation workers, its a constant problem & headache trying to get rid of them. Airport operations sometimes employ loud sounds to scare them but, they often just come back. Some airports even resulted in killing some birds, but they recieve the wrath of PETA animal rights group.
The good news is that today more aircraft engines are build stronger then ever to take punishment from bird strikes. This wasn't the case back in the 60's & 70's. For example, today's aircraft manufacture's test new engines by slamming whole processed turkeys purchased from supermarkets into spinning jet engines. They may slam 2-3 at a time to make sure the engines will still work. I personally had about 10 bird stirkes in my 21 year aviation career that only suffered minor damage to the airframe but, no engine failure. This is proof that this is the least issue to have anxiety about.
